Data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday showed that China purchased a small amount of American pork last week before it imposed a 10% tariff on imports of U.S. agricultural products on September 1.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, China purchased 1,861 tons of pork from the United States between August 16 and 22, up from 220 tons in the previous week. China is the world's largest pork consumer and pig producer.
As China fights the deadly outbreak of swine fever, trade tensions are escalating. African swine fever has led to the deaths of millions of pigs and pushed the price of Chinese pork to a record high.
China's Ministry of Commerce said Thursday it would seek to increase pork imports and release frozen meat from national reserves to boost supply.
In a tit-for-tat trade war, Beijing last year imposed retaliatory tariffs on imports of American agricultural products, including the current 62% tariff on American pork.
China said on Friday it would impose tariffs on U.S. agricultural products, leading U.S. President Trump to announce new tariffs on some $550 billion of targeted Chinese goods.
China's Ministry of Commerce said on August 5 that Chinese companies stopped buying American agricultural products in the latest escalating trade war.
