China's Ministry of Commerce announced Monday that it had filed a lawsuit against the United States on import tariff measures at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
On Sunday, the United States began imposing 15% tariffs on a variety of Chinese goods. China also began imposing new tariffs on American crude oil. The Sino-US trade war escalated once again.
China did not release details of its legal case, but said U.S. tariffs affected $300 billion of Chinese exports to the United States.
In its statement, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that the latest US tariff Measures seriously violated the consensus reached at the meeting between the two heads of state in Osaka, and that China will firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests in accordance with relevant WTO rules.
The lawsuit is China's third challenge to US President Trump's tariff policy against China at the WTO.
According to WTO rules, the US side has 60 days to try to resolve this latest dispute. After that, China can ask for a WTO ruling, which will take years. If the U.S. violation is judged, China may eventually be allowed to take trade sanctions by the WTO.
