More than three years have passed since the referendum on Britain's withdrawal from Europe, and this setback still fails to resolve the uncertainty of the withdrawal process, from the turbulent "no agreement" withdrawal to the possibility of giving up withdrawal.
Tuesday's victory was only the first obstacle that lawmakers set to prevent the government from leaving Europe without an agreement, allowing them to take control of the parliamentary agenda again.
Wednesday they will seek to pass a law that will force Johnson to ask the European Union to postpone withdrawal for the third time until January 31, unless he gets a prior agreement on the terms and modalities of withdrawal approved by Parliament.
This will put Johnson in a similar dilemma to that of former Prime Minister Teresa May, who failed three times in Parliament before negotiating a British withdrawal agreement with the European Union. Johnson took over as Prime Minister six weeks ago, promising that his tougher approach would force the European Union to make a better and parliamentary exit agreement.
Twenty-one defective Conservative MPs are now facing expulsion, including Nicholas Soames, grandson of British World War II leader Churchill, and two former Chancellors of the exchequer, Philip Hammond and Kenneth Clarke.
"I don't want to hold an election, but if lawmakers vote tomorrow to stop negotiations and force another meaningless British retreat to be postponed, which may take years, then the election will be the only way to solve this situation," Johnson told parliament after the vote.
