Two diplomats closely following the investigation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there were traces of uranium that the Iranian government had not explained from samples taken by the Agency from what the Prime Minister of Israel called a "secret atomic warehouse".
IAEA is investigating the source of these particles and asking Iran to explain these traces. But according to two diplomats, the Tehran authorities did not do so, exacerbating tensions between the United States and Iran. The United States imposed sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and Iran responded by violating the 2015 Iranian nuclear agreement.
In a speech a year ago, Prime Minister Netanyahu, who strongly opposed the Iranian nuclear agreement, called on IAEA to go to the scene immediately, saying that 15 kilograms of unidentified radioactive material had been stored there and had been transferred.
Reuters first reported in April that IAEA had investigated the site and sent environmental samples for analysis. IAEA, which oversees the Iranian nuclear agreement, once called the on-site investigation a step that would be taken "only if necessary".
Israel and the US media reported using the term radioactive material to refer to the sample, which is as vague as Natanyahu's.
However, the diplomats said the trace amounts are uranium, an element Iran is enriching, and one of the two fissile elements that can be used to make a nuclear bomb. One diplomat said that the uranium was not highly enriched and its purity was not close to the level used to produce nuclear weapons.
