The North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Wednesday that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un guided a test launch of a super-large multi-barrel rocket on Tuesday.
South Korean officials say North Korea launched a new round of short-range launches on Tuesday, just hours after the DPRK offered to resume stalled denuclearization talks with the United States.
Kim Jong-un, who had previously guided the launch of the same type of multi-barrel rocket, said that in terms of operational operations, its functions were "ultimately verified" and that the work to be done by the rocket was "continuous fire testing", which was not detailed in the KCNA report.
KCNA reported that Kim Jong-un gave instructions to accompanying officials on future tasks and how to "steadily" develop advanced defense technology. The accompanying personnel included his sister Kim and other senior North Korean officials.
Although analysts believe that North Korea's weapons tests have multiple purposes, such as developing technology and safeguarding national defense capabilities, Tuesday's tests seem to have carefully chosen the time to send a message to Washington authorities about what might happen if the United States did not negotiate with North Korea with a viable plan.
Although U.S. President Trump disapproved of the previous tests this year and said he did not believe that short-range missile tests violated the agreement, John Bolton, the U.S. National Security Adviser, said that even short-range launches violated United Nations resolutions. Bolton has now been abruptly dismissed by Trump.
