On his way from New Mexico to California on Air Force One, Trump told reporters that Beijing believed he would win re-election, but Chinese officials preferred to deal with others.
He said he had told China that if an agreement was reached after the November 3, 2020 general election, the terms of the agreement would be "much worse" for Beijing than could be reached at present.
"I think an agreement may be reached soon, either before or one day after the election. If it is after the election, it will be an agreement you have never seen before, and it will be the greatest agreement ever, and China knows that, "he said.
"They think I will win the election. China thinks I will win easily, and they are worried because I told them,'If an agreement is reached after the election, the terms will be much worse than what we have reached now. This is what I told them. Do they want to see others win? Certainly." Trump added.
Two days later, deputy trade negotiators from the United States and China will meet in Washington for the first face-to-face talks in nearly two months.
The purpose of the talks was to pave the way for the high-level consultations expected to take place in early October. The talks in early October were aimed at finding a solution to the 14-month-long fierce trade war between the two countries.
Last week, U.S. President Trump delayed for two weeks the $250 billion tariff on Chinese imports to the United States, which was scheduled to begin on October 1, after China delayed its retaliatory tariff on some U.S. anti-cancer drugs, feed ingredients and lubricants.
