Trump said that under the initial phase of the agreement, Japan would reduce import tariffs on U.S. beef, pork, wheat and cheese, opening up the Japanese market for about $7 billion a year in U.S. products.
Although the agreement does not cover the auto trade, Abe said he was assured by Trump that the United States would not threaten to impose a "232 clause" national security tariff on imported cars from Japan before imposing a levy.
"There is a clear agreement between President Trump and myself that no additional tariffs will be imposed," Abe said at a press conference. "With the entry into force of our trade agreement, I believe that both economies can achieve further growth and development."
After the signing ceremony held between the two leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, U.S. Trade Representative Lethizer said that the two countries would discuss the issue of automobile tariffs in the next round of negotiations, which is expected to begin in April next year.
Cars are the biggest source of the US $67 billion trade deficit with Japan, and Trump has repeatedly complained that American automakers do not enjoy equal access to the Japanese market.
Wright Hitzer said that the United States did not want to impose tariffs on automobiles, based on the results of the U.S. Department of Commerce, which found that imports of automobiles would threaten national security.
Japan's foreign minister, Mitsuki Maki, has agreed a trade agreement with Lethizer. Mr. Maki said that as long as the agreement was faithfully implemented, no tariffs would be imposed.
The Japanese government also said that the follow-up negotiations would seek to abolish the current 2.5% tariff imposed by the United States on Japanese automobiles, and would not lead to a quota set by the United States for imports of Japanese automobiles.
