Britain's Guardian and other mainstream media reported Friday that the wife of a US diplomat in Britain drove to death a 19-year-old British youth, then left the country with diplomatic immunity to escape the British police investigation.
The family member of the US diplomat drove back in August 27th and hit the British youth Harry Dunn who was riding a motorcycle near the Northampton air force base. Dunn died.
Local police told Sky News that they applied to the United States to cancel the diplomatic immunity of the 42-year-old perpetrator for further investigation, which was rejected by the United States, and then learned that she had left Britain. Police said the woman had explicitly told police that she had "no plans to leave Britain in the near future".
In response to Sky News, the US embassy in Britain confirmed that the accident was associated with a vehicle driven by an American diplomat's spouse. "For security and privacy, we can not confirm the identity of the personnel involved in the incident, but we can confirm that their family has left the UK."
The U.S. Embassy said: "In such incidents, the abolition of the immunity of U.S. diplomats and their relatives abroad is highly valued by high-level officials. Given the global impact of such decisions, careful consideration is needed; immunities are rarely abolished."
Dominique Raab, the British Foreign Secretary, told Sky News that he had "sent a telegram to the US ambassador to express his position" for the United States to decide "regret". He hoped the US side would reconsider it.
Britain and the United States have different traffic regulations. British vehicles drive on the left side of the road, while the United States drives on the right side.
