According to a speech seen by Reuters, U.S. Commerce Secretary Ross said Thursday that tariffs forced China to focus on U.S. concerns.
Ross also said that the United States did not want to impose import tariffs on Chinese goods more than a year ago, but tariffs forced Beijing to take action.
According to a copy of the speech seen by Reuters, Ross said, "We don't like tariffs. In fact, we prefer not to use them. But after years of negotiation and inaction, tariffs finally compel China to pay attention to our concerns."
Ross is making an official visit to Australia.
