As the established deadline for brexit approaches, a series of events take the worrying bargaining process of both sides to a new level, but whether a breakthrough can be achieved before that is still unknown.
The European Union's move ends a tumultuous week, with an open war of words and speeches between London and Brussels earlier this week.
On Thursday, British Prime Minister Johnson and Irish Prime Minister Valladka said they had found a "path" to a possible agreement, and on Friday some officials said they were cautiously optimistic about reaching an agreement.
"I think both of us can see a way to reach an agreement, but that doesn't mean we can definitely reach an agreement," Johnson said on Friday. "There's still a way to go. Now it's important that our negotiators have proper consultations on how to solve this problem."
Ireland's position is crucial if an agreement is to be reached to avoid possible disorderly retreat. A disorderly retreat would undermine global growth, disrupt financial markets and possibly even split Britain.
Any solution to the most intractable issues in the negotiations must be approved by Ireland: how to prevent the British province of Northern Ireland from becoming the backdoor to the EU market without implementing border controls.
A diplomat and an EU official said that Barnier, the EU's chief representative in charge of negotiations on Britain's withdrawal from Europe, had told members that Britain's position had changed and had accepted that its proposal to replace the so-called "safeguards clause" could not include the establishment of a customs border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
