Turkey continued its offensive in northern Syria on Tuesday, in defiance of U.S. sanctions and calls for it to stop. At the same time, Russian backed Syrian forces moved into the important city of manbij after the withdrawal of US forces.
Reuters reporters followed Syrian government forces into the heart of mambiji, a previously gunpowder filled area that had been jointly garrisoned by U.S. forces and Turkey.
Russian and Syrian flags were flying in a building and a military convoy on the outskirts of the city.
Russian media Interfax news agency quoted the Russian Ministry of defense as saying that Syrian forces controlled an area of about 1000 square kilometers near mambiji, including the tabqa military airport.
The United States announced Sunday that it would withdraw all 1000 U.S. troops from northern Syria. Its former Kurdish allies immediately formed a new alliance with the Assad government, inviting troops into towns they controlled.
