Members of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, holtzmann, the new president of the Austrian Central Bank, and Knott, the head of the Dutch Central Bank, questioned the ECB's inflation target of just under 2%. For most of the past eight years, when Mr Draghi was president of the European Central Bank, the inflation target has not been met, despite the bank's ultra loose monetary policy.
"I fundamentally question the inflation target," Holtzman told Handelsblatt. "I urge the ECB to assess to see if the current policy position is right."
A week after Holtzman's comments, the ECB will hold the last management committee meeting of President Draghi's eight-year term. During MR Draghi's tenure, the most representative was the implementation of the 2.6 trillion euro bond purchase plan and other radical measures aimed at boosting inflation and preventing the collapse of the eurozone.
Holtzman questioned the effectiveness of these measures and said that under Lagarde, who took over on November 1, the inflation target is likely to be revised.
Mr Knott earlier said in New York that the ECB should set a range near its inflation target in order to leave some room for manoeuvre when setting monetary policy.
