According to data and shipping sources, at least three tankers carrying us cargo are on their way to Asia. Previously, Washington issued a temporary sanctions exemption permit to allow related companies to close business with a Chinese tanker company.
On September 25, Washington announced sanctions against Chinese oil tanker companies, including Dalian COSCO Shipping tankers (Dalian), a subsidiary of China's state-owned COSCO, which is one of the most severe sanctions taken by the U.S. government since the U.S. crackdown on Iranian oil exports.
Shipping industry sources said Washington has begun granting temporary exemptions to tankers that completed shipping around October 15.
The three tankers have sailed from the U.S. Gulf of Mexico around this time to Asia, where they had been waiting for weeks after the U.S. imposed sanctions, according to Luft. COSCO's three tankers hold millions of barrels of oil.
More previously restricted COSCO tankers are preparing to sail the cargo on board, sources said Friday.
The exemption is valid until December 20 and allows "maintenance or termination" of transactions with Dalian COSCO marine oil transportation Co., Ltd., including the unloading of non Iranian crude oil, according to a US Treasury Circular on Thursday.
A shipping source said oil ships had been more comfortable unloading before, saying Thursday's announcement from the U.S. Treasury only formalized what was already known.
"The wording of these sanctions in the trump administration makes you never feel safe. I think it's intentional, "the source said.
