Several Chinese officials remain optimistic that China and the United States will complete the first phase of the trade agreement next month, despite the abrupt cancellation of the Chile summit, which was scheduled to hold a meeting between Chinese and American leaders and sign a trade agreement.
Zhu Guangyao, a counsellor of the State Council and former Vice Minister of finance, told Reuters on the sidelines of a Sino US relations forum in Singapore that if China and the United States can maintain close communication through diplomatic channels, he remains optimistic that the two sides can sign the first phase of the trade agreement next month.
"Based on mutual trust and mutual benefit, I believe that the two countries can achieve significant achievements," Zhu said. Before he left office in 2018, Zhu Guangyao directly participated in bilateral trade negotiations with China as deputy finance minister.
China's economic and trade teams have been in close communication with China and the United States, and the negotiations are progressing smoothly, the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday. The two leaders will call again on Friday.
Chile announced on Wednesday that it would cancel hosting the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next month due to street protests. This has brought new obstacles to the efforts of the leaders of China and the United States to end the trade war.
President Trump said this week that he hoped to sign a provisional trade agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the APEC summit in Chile on 16-17 November. The White House said the United States still hopes to sign a preliminary trade agreement with China next month, but has yet to identify an alternative venue for the session.
