US President Trump proposed a trade agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Iowa, a news that sparked waves in maskatin City, Iowa. Since 1985, the small town on the Mississippi River has met Xi Jinping two times.
When Xi Jinping first visited the small town with only 24 thousand people, he was given the key to maskatin City, when he led an agricultural research group to live here and live in a local resident's home. He also met for the first time and became friends with Branstad, then governor. Branstad is now the trump administration's ambassador to China.
Xi Jinping visited China again in 2012 as vice president of China. He visited again and met some local "old friends" whom he met in 1980s.
That is the era when Sino US relations are full of hope, but now Trump launched a tit for tat tariff war. The Secretary of state of the United States declared that the Communist Party led by Xi Jinping was "hostile to the United States and our values".
Trade negotiators from the United States and China are now working to complete the text of the "first phase" agreement to ease the 16 month long trade war. For Iowa, an important soybean exporting state, tariffs have a huge impact on farmers.
