Several diplomats familiar with the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Wednesday that Iran briefly detained an IAEA inspector in the country and confiscated her travel documents.
This is the first time since the signing of the 2015 Iranian nuclear agreement. Under the agreement, Iran restricted its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions by the international community.
Hours after Reuters reported the incident, Iran confirmed last week that it had blocked an investigator from entering the site of Natanz, the core area of the uranium enrichment project, for fear that she might carry "suspicious material," according to Fars.
At present, the frictions between Iran and Western countries are increasing. In the face of the withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear agreement and the resumption of sanctions, Tehran has gradually broken the agreement restrictions. The IAEA is also in a transitional period, and the new director general will not take office until next month.
The incident is scheduled to be reported at Thursday's IAEA meeting. The interim notice from the IAEA board of directors will meet on Thursday to discuss "two security protection incidents that are not on the established agenda".
Three diplomats familiar with the IAEA said the woman's travel documents had been confiscated, two of whom said she had been briefly detained.
