A spokesman for the International Monetary Fund said Thursday that if the United States and China reach a first stage trade agreement to phase out tariffs, this could improve the IMF's baseline forecast for the global economy. IMF's economic baseline forecast shows that the trade war between the two countries has significantly slowed global economic growth this year.
International Monetary Fund spokesman Gerry Rice said at a regular news conference that the organization welcomes any progress that can ease trade tensions and reduce tariffs between the world's two major economies, especially if it is part of a long-term agreement.
"We think it has the potential to improve our baseline forecast," Rice said of the agreement between China and the United States to lift tariffs, "but we need to wait for the details again."
China's Ministry of Commerce said that China and the United States agreed to phase out tariff increases.
