The governments of Queensland and New South Wales on Monday declared a state of emergency as the eastern part of the country prepared for a "catastrophic" fire.
Authorities are urging residents in the areas with the highest risk of fire to evacuate as soon as possible because of the unprecedented hot, dry and windy weather forecast on Tuesday, which officials fear will make the existing fire more dangerous.
Bushfires in northern New South Wales and Queensland over the weekend have killed three people and destroyed more than 150 homes.
Members said the state of emergency will last for several days. In an emergency, the fire department has more power to control government resources, force evacuation, close roads and cut off water, electricity and gas supply.
"No matter where you are, you have to be vigilant, everyone has to plan for the worst, we don't allow any complacency," New South Wales governor Gladys berejiklian told reporters.
Shane Fitzsimons, head of the state's Rural Fire Service (RFs), called for people to evacuate before the situation worsened and warned that new fires could occur up to 20 kilometers in front of the existing fire.
