In a letter to army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, democratic leader Chuck Schumer of the U.S. Senate on Tuesday raised concerns about the use of Chinese owned tiktok social platforms by the U.S. military to recruit young people.
"While I agree that the army must adjust its recruitment methods to attract young Americans to join the army, I urge you to assess the potential national security risks posed by Chinese technology enterprises when choosing to use certain platforms," Schumer wrote in a letter dated November 7.
Tiktok has stressed its independence, but failed to ease congressional concerns about the security of personal data of US citizens on the platform.
The company said this year that tiktok has 26.5 million monthly active users in the United States, of which about 60% are aged 16-24.
"National security experts raised concerns about tiktok's collection and processing of user data, including user content and communication, IP address, location related data, metadata and other sensitive personal information," Schumer wrote.
