Asian stocks and US stock index futures fell on Wednesday. Concerns about the deadlock in the Sino US trade talks and the aggravation of turbulence in Hong Kong hit risk assets.
The MSCI Mingsheng Asia Pacific Index (excluding Japan) fell 1.01% to a more than one week low. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index. HSI fell 1.8 percent to a two-week low amid concerns that anti-government demonstrations appear to be spiraling out of control.
The dollar fell in Asia. U.S. President trump said a trade agreement with China would be reached "soon," but failed to provide new details about when and where to sign the agreement, disappointing investors. The speech was originally seen as an important speech on Trump's economic policy.
Trump also threatened more tariffs if the two countries did not sign a deal, which also upset some investors.
Oil prices fell as prospects for a quick settlement of the trade dispute between the US and China darkened and energy demand is likely to decline in the future.
