North Korea on Wednesday threatened to fight back if the United States holds a joint military exercise with South Korea as planned, increasing pressure on the U.S. government. North Korea is limited to the end of the year, requiring the United States to adopt a flexible attitude.
The United States said last week that the joint air force exercise between the United States and South Korea scheduled for next month will be smaller than previous exercises.
In its statement, the State Council of North Korea said that it was "the right of self-defence" to fight back any act that threatened the sovereignty and security of the country. But the statement did not elaborate.
The Commission, chaired by North Korea's top leader, Kim Jong Un, has made a rare statement.
A senior North Korean diplomat last week also accused the U.S. - South Korea joint air force exercise of "throwing cold water" on the talks between the two countries. The North Korean government opposes the joint military exercises of the United States and South Korea as a preview of the invasion of North Korea.
In a recent statement, North Korea said it had taken measures to calm us concerns, but the US failed to respond equally, making the DPRK "feel betrayed".
When asked to comment on North Korea's statement, the State Department did not mention the exercise, but a spokesman referred to the agreement reached when Kim Jong Un and US President trump first met in Singapore in June 2018.
"President trump remains committed to advancing the commitments made in Singapore to transform relations between the two countries, establish lasting peace and achieve denuclearization," she said.
