Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday that China hopes to reach a preliminary trade agreement with the United States and has been trying to avoid trade wars, but is also willing to retaliate if necessary.
Economists warn that long-term disputes between the world's two largest economies, disrupting supply chains, hindering investment and curbing corporate confidence, are exacerbating risks to the global economy.
According to a joint report, Xi Jinping told delegates attending an international forum: we hope to reach a "first stage" agreement on the basis of mutual respect and equality.
"We will fight back when necessary, but we have been actively trying to avoid a trade war," he said. We didn't start this trade war. It's not what we want.
Xi Jinping was answering questions from representatives of the Peng Boxin Economic Forum at the Great Hall of the people in Beijing.
Xi Jinping said: we have always said that we do not want to start a trade war, but we are not afraid of a trade war.
