Eight people were missing and presumed dead a day after the eruption of the white island volcano off New Zealand's North Island, New Zealand said Tuesday, with at least five others confirmed dead and more than 30 injured.
New Zealand's prime minister, Jacinda ardern, told reporters that after the eruption, the aerial reconnaissance aircraft found no sign of life. The eruption sent thousands of feet of ash into the air.
"For those who have lost or haven't found family or friends, we are deeply saddened by your grief at this time," adn said at a press conference in wakatani, near the resort.
Among the missing and injured are new Zealanders, as well as tourists from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China and Malaysia, she said. But she gave no more details.
Rescue workers have not yet been able to enter the island. GNS science, a New Zealand geological science agency, warned that the chances of another eruption in the next 24 hours were 50%.
Adn said about 30 people were taken to the hospital, many of them seriously injured.
"The ash is obviously very serious." She said. "We heard that a ship came back with half a meter of ash."
White Island is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the east coast of the North Island, and huge smog can be seen from the mainland. Volcanologists say the ash spewed to a height of 12000 feet (3658 meters).
