The World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) on Monday decided to ban Russia from participating in major international sports events in the next four years, including the next summer and Winter Olympics and the 2022 football World Cup, for tampering with doping test data.
The Executive Committee of Wada found that Moscow had planted false evidence in the laboratory data and deleted the documents related to the positive doping test, which were originally helpful to identify doping fraud. The decision was then made by the Wada Executive Committee.
Wada's decision is a blow to Russia's national pride. Russia, a traditional sports power, has performed well in many sports, but a series of doping scandals have damaged its reputation.
"For too long, the use of stimulants in Russia has tarnished clean sports," said Craig Reedie, President of Wada. Previously, the Executive Committee of Wada held a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.
In a statement, Reedie said there was a need for a strong response to Russia's actions, adding: "this is what we are doing today."
Wada confirmed that the Russian national team will not be able to represent its country in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and may only play as a neutral player.
However, it is not clear how to play in a neutral role in the world cup. FIFA said it was in contact with Wada to clarify the scope of the decision.
