A report released by the labor department on Wednesday also showed that core inflation rose last month. Fed officials will close a two-day policy meeting later Wednesday and are expected to keep interest rates unchanged. The Fed cut interest rates for the first time since 2008 in July, but hinted in October that the easing cycle would come to an end.
"The message to the Fed officials who are meeting today is that there is not 'no inflation'," said Chris rupkey, chief economist at MUFG in New York. "There is no worrying undercurrent of deflation in the current economy, and Fed officials do not need to further cut interest rates to boost economic demand."
CPI rose 0.3% in November as households spent more on gas and electricity and food prices rose for the third consecutive month. CPI rose 0.4% in October. CPI rose 2.1% in the 12 months to November and 1.8% in October.
Economists polled by Reuters had previously predicted that CPI rose 0.2% in November, up 2.0% year on year.
Excluding volatile food and energy, core CPI rose 0.2%, flat with October. The core CPI rose 0.2298% last month without rounding, compared with 0.1572% in October. The core CPI was boosted by health care costs, used car and truck prices, as well as entertainment costs, hotel and Motel accommodation prices.
In the 12 months to November, core CPI growth was flat at 2.3% compared with October.
The Fed's inflation target of 2.0% tracks the core personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index, which lags behind other inflation indicators. The core PCE price index rose 1.6% year-on-year in October and has been below the Fed's target this year.
