The New York Times quoted unnamed sources as saying the U.S. government secretly expelled two Chinese embassy officials earlier this year after they drove into a military base.
One of the Chinese officials is believed to be an intelligence agent acting as a cover for diplomatic status, the weekly newspaper said.
The two Chinese diplomats, who bypassed security barriers this autumn, drove into a Virginia Military base until they were stopped by a fire truck, the report said.
A law enforcement official familiar with the matter confirmed to Reuters that the New York Times report was true.
A spokesman for the FBI declined to comment. The State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
China's foreign ministry and embassy in Washington have not been immediately reached for comment.
