Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said Thursday that the U.S. government should not reach a trade agreement with China unless it ensures the release of two Canadians detained in Beijing.
Shortly after Vancouver Police arrested Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, under a U.S. arrest warrant in December 2018, the two Canadians were detained in China and faced national security charges.
Trudeau said Canada has been working with Washington to persuade China to release the two. They are businessman Michael spavor and former diplomat Michael kovrig.
"We have said that if the problems of Meng Wanzhou and two Canadians cannot be solved, the United States should not sign a final and comprehensive agreement with China," Trudeau told Quebec TV station TVA.
It is not clear for the moment whether Trudeau refers to the first phase of the trade agreement between China and the United States, which has not yet been formally signed, or a more complete agreement.
U.S. Treasury Secretary John nuchin said Thursday that the two sides will sign the first phase of the trade agreement in early January. Under the agreement, U.S. agricultural exports to China will double in the next two years.
