The Russian Foreign Ministry accused the UN Secretary General of turning a blind eye to what it said was the delay in the issuance of visas to Russian officials for meetings at the UN headquarters.
The Russian government said the United States deliberately delayed the issuance of visas to Russian officials preparing to travel to the United Nations headquarters, saying the move could further damage Russian US relations.
In a statement, Maria Zakharova, spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that some Russian Defense officials who were preparing to go to the UN Secretariat had to wait "several months" to get visas.
"It's clear that all this happened with the acquiescence of the UN Secretary General Guterres, who actually ignored the US's violation of the UN Charter," Zakharova said.
In September, Russia called on a senior U.S. diplomat to protest, saying the U.S. government had unacceptable refusal to issue visas to members of its delegation to the United Nations General Assembly.
