According to the Wall Street Journal of the United States, 143 families of U.S. troops and mercenaries who died or were injured in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2017 filed a lawsuit as plaintiffs in a federal court in the United States, accusing multiple U.S. and international contractors of "paying protection fees" to the Taliban when they participated in the reconstruction project in Afghanistan.
Family members of the U.S. military and mercenaries confirmed that several companies involved in reconstruction projects in Afghanistan have repeatedly paid the Taliban through local subcontractors, who either transfer directly to the Taliban or hire Taliban members as security guards. According to the lawsuit, even if Taleban would use these funds to attack the US military and companies not engaged in reconstruction projects in Afghanistan, the US and international contractors would still transfer money to the Taliban, because this would save the cost of safeguarding their resources and staff safety.
It is reported that the lawsuit involves a number of contractors contracting for U.S. government projects, including Dai GLOBAL LLC and Louis Berger group, the largest two contractors of USAID, who provided about $1 billion in assistance for projects developed in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2009. So far, both companies have declined to comment on the allegations.
