On Christmas Eve 2019, the 8th China Japan ROK leaders' meeting released the outlook for the next decade of China Japan ROK cooperation in Chengdu, proposing to accelerate the negotiation of China Japan ROK free trade agreement. Under the background of the wave of de globalization and the great impact on the existing multilateral economic and trade pattern, China, Japan and South Korea released positive signals to strengthen regional cooperation at this time, which undoubtedly injected a strong impetus into the economic cooperation in Northeast Asia.
The relations between China, Japan and South Korea have been deteriorated for many times due to historical grudges and geopolitical considerations. Can the three countries that are compared by the media as "Wei, Shu and Wu" make breakthroughs? How to understand China's role in the new pattern? The author believes that in the context of profound changes in the world pattern, China, Japan and South Korea are not talking about resolving disputes and expanding cooperation, but are rational choices in line with their respective national interests.
Economy: from Japan to China
In 1999, the China Japan South Korea cooperation mechanism was launched after the Asian financial crisis. In the past two decades, the biggest change in regional relations has been the rise of China. In 1999, China's GDP exceeded 1 trillion US dollars, just surpassing that of South Korea, but still less than a quarter of that of Japan. Since then, China has taken the opportunity of "entering WTO" to integrate into the global trade system and overtake cars in a detour, while Japan has experienced a recession and its economy has stagnated, while South Korea is hard to compete with China and Japan due to its dependence on exports and limited domestic market.
