Q: how does a virus get from bats to people?
A: the virus is constantly mutating. All of these new viruses increase the risk of moving from one host to another. It's very common that human intervention starts to work. For example, for SARS, large numbers of civet cats have contributed to the epidemic. These mammals eat bats and live in the same caves as bats, so they become intermediate hosts. With the improvement of living standards in Asia, the demand for these popular mammals as food surged.
Should we be afraid of bats?
A: they have been demonized since SARS. In fact, they carry no more viruses than rodents and other mammals. In contrast, bats account for more than 1/5 of the world's mammal species. It is for this reason that the diversity of viruses they carry is very important globally.
