After a sharp increase in new coronavirus infections in South Korea, Italy and Iran, there was growing concern on Monday that China's new coronavirus epidemic would develop into a global pandemic, with devastating consequences for countries around the world.
"The weekend news changed things to some extent, and now the focus is more on the threat of outbreaks outside China," said Chris Weston, research director at pepperstone, a broker.
The number of people infected in Daegu, the fourth largest city in South Korea, has increased rapidly. Asiana Airlines (020560. KS) and Korean Airlines (003490. KS) suspended flights to the city until March 9 and 28, respectively.
In Europe, French health minister Olivier Veran said he would soon discuss with his European counterparts how best to deal with the possible spread of the virus in Europe. Italy had previously reported a third death and 150 infections, compared with just three confirmed cases before Friday.
"There are no new cases in France. But we have trouble at home, in Italy, and we are paying close attention, "Veran said at a press conference.
Italy has blocked the most affected towns in the north and called for a halt to public gatherings, including the Venice Carnival, to contain the outbreak. Two cases have been confirmed in Venice.
