U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday urged countries to prevent the new coronavirus from spiraling into a crisis with "major consequences" for global health and the world economy.
Guterres told reporters during a visit to the World Health Organization (who) public health emergency action center that he called on countries to fully fund who's $675 million funding request to cover the organization's three-month overall action.
"All countries - this is now a problem affecting many countries in the world - all countries must do everything to be ready," Guterres said after a briefing by who director general Tadesse and other senior officials
"It is still possible to control the epidemic, but if some countries fail, if some countries fail to take all necessary measures, the situation can still get out of control, with major consequences for global health and the economy," Guterres said
He said who's funding request is crucial to support governments and to "avoid this tragic disease" as a "global nightmare.".
In response to a question from Xinhua news agency, Guterres said that the decline in the number of newly confirmed cases in China is a good trend, which he hopes will be maintained.
