Michel Barnier, the European Union's chief representative for talks on brexit, said on Wednesday that it was impossible to reach a trade agreement with the UK similar to the one signed by the EU and Canada. At present, the two sides are preparing to start difficult negotiations on the new relationship of Britain's retreat.
A new round of EU UK negotiations began on Monday after Barner said that the UK needs to make so-called fair competition environment guarantees in order to obtain "preferential access" to the EU market.
"The UK says it wants a Canadian style deal. But the problem is that the UK is not Canada, "banier said at an event in the European Parliament.
He said this was because the UK is close to the EU and the scale of trade is much larger than that of Canada.
"We are ready to provide preferential country market access to the UK," he said, calling it "unprecedented" for any other country.
"Can we really do this if the UK cannot firmly guarantee that it will abide by the principle of fair competition and avoid unfair trade advantages? I'm afraid the answer is no. "
Barner said the EU would never risk breaking up the single market, and modern trade agreements also deal with labor, environment, competition and other sustainability standards.
