A spokesman for the International Monetary Fund said Thursday that the rapid spread of the new coronavirus will have an impact on global economic growth, and the IMF may therefore cut its growth forecast.
IMF chief Georgi Ieva warned at a meeting of financial leaders of the group of 20 (G20) countries in Riyadh on Saturday that economic growth estimates are expected to be lowered. She said in a statement that the new crown epidemic is expected to reduce China's economic growth to 5.6% this year, 0.4 percentage points lower than expected in January, and 0.1 percentage point lower than global economic growth.
"We are likely to cut our global growth forecasts," IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said at a regular press conference. He added that he had no new data beyond those published in Georgieva's statement, but said more details would emerge as the IMF prepares to release a new world economic outlook in April.
U.S. financial markets continued to suffer Thursday as the new crown epidemic spread rapidly outside China, raising concerns about the impact of the epidemic on economic growth and corporate performance. The S & P 500 and NASDAQ are down more than 10% from their intraday record highs set on February 19, while the Dow Jones industrial average is 10% below its February 12 peak.
"It is clear that the virus will have an impact on economic growth. That depends in large part on the pace of recovery, spillover effects, the impact on the supply chain and the severity of the impact that other countries may be affected, "Rice said.
He said he expected to make a decision soon on the impact of the new outbreak on the annual spring meeting of the IMF and the world bank in April, and pointed out that several meeting forms were being considered.
Officials are considering reducing the size of meetings or calling them, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
