The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the world bank said on Tuesday that their spring meeting this year will use "virtual form" instead of live meetings in Washington, D.C., because of growing concerns about the rapidly spreading new crown epidemic.
The spring meeting of the IMF and the world bank was scheduled to be held from April 17 to 19, and about 10000 government officials, business people, representatives of civil society organizations and journalists will attend.
Officials said the IMF will still release the latest world economic outlook, which may include a global economic outlook cut in response to the outbreak. The epidemic has hit the global air travel, manufacturing and tourism industries hard.
In a joint statement, IMF President Georgieva and World Bank President David Malpass said they are committed to ensuring the health and safety of participants and staff.
One possible exception, an IMF official said, is that the IMF Steering Committee, the international monetary and financial committee, may still meet face-to-face. Details of the meeting are still being worked out, the official said.
A spokesman for the bank said the bank's development committee planned to meet in virtual form.
Some experts say the decision to change the virtual way of the spring meeting may be permanent because it will save money, time and the carbon footprint of the two institutions.
