Washington (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has hinted that if elected to the party, he might choose a woman as his vice presidential running mate, promising to do so in Sunday's debate with rival Bernie Sanders.
Although she has a national turnout of less than 5% and is not eligible to participate in the debate, only gabat is still in the competition.
Sanders said he would "probably" choose a woman as his running mate, but did not make a firm commitment.
"Probably, I will. For me, it's not just about nominating a woman, it's also about making sure we have a progressive woman, and there are progressive women there. So my very strong trend is in that direction. " Saunders said.
Two women were previously nominated by major political parties as vice president of the United States - democratic Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 and Republican Sarah Palin in 2008. Democratic Hillary Clinton, the first woman to be nominated president by a major party, lost to trump in 2016.
