On the morning of March 17, according to Taiwan's economic daily, Japanese media reported that the U.S. government wanted TSMC, the world's largest Fab generation factory, to produce in the United States for safety reasons. TSMC is speeding up the assessment of whether to set up an advanced 2-nanometer chip factory in the United States. In response, TSMC said that it was still in the process of evaluation and there was no new progress. At present, there is no specific plan and everything will be considered according to customer needs.
Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, has confirmed that there are US customers who are concerned by the US Department of defense and hope that defense related products can be produced in the US. However, TSMC is not directly under pressure from the US authorities. According to Liu, manufacturing in the United States, including service and cost, will be a challenge. TSMC will help customers solve problems related to competitiveness and national defense security, and is currently studying traceable chips.
Two people who have heard the briefing told Nikkei Asian review that TSMC is actively considering building a new plant in the United States. They say the new plant will target the world's most cutting-edge technology, producing semiconductors that are more advanced than the five nanometer chips apple is about to use on this year's latest 5g iPhone.
