After the EU failed to reach a consensus last week on measures to ease the economic blow, French ministers said Sunday that how the EU responds to the outbreak of the coronavirus will determine its future credibility.
The EU is trying to make a concerted response to the coronavirus, which is the latest test of EU solidarity after the EU's brexit, the migration tide in 2015-2016 and the faltering debt crisis in the eurozone.
"If Europe is just a market when the time is right, it doesn't make sense," Amelie de montchalin, Minister of European affairs, told France Radio International
The eurozone's sectors are locked in a stalemate Thursday after leaders reached a deadlock on how to minimize economic pain and prepare for a final recovery. The plight of the South exacerbated the situation in the south by resistance from the rich north to provide more support.
Germany and the Netherlands are firmly opposed to the issuance of joint bonds by Italy, Spain, Portugal and France to finance the stimulus package. There are also debates about sharing medical equipment and border controls.
In Austria, Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz is angry about double standards within the EU, as the country slows down efforts to buy masks from Germany, while other capitals criticise Vienna for its control of the Italian border.
"After the crisis, there will be intense discussions within the EU," Kurtz told the times.
If the rest of Europe remains ill, Germany and the Netherlands will not see an economic rebound, Mr. dmoncharin said. She added that the coronavirus crisis had brought survival problems to Europe.
