Shipping data released on Thursday showed a Chinese government investigation vessel in a standoff as Vietnamese vessels moved south near Malaysia. It is alleged that China is using the pandemic to assert its presence in the South China Sea.
Last year, after the sea area rich in marine resources was closely tracked, "ocean 8" was found in Vietnam on the 8th, which is a potential global flash point when the United States asked China for a large number of maritime claims.
According to marine traffic, a tracking website, the ship appeared to have started an investigation on Thursday, 352km (218 miles) off the coast of Brunei and Malaysia.
That seems to be in the north of Malaysia's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), close to the waters claimed by Vietnam and Malaysia.
Malaysia maritime sources said a Malaysian coast guard ship, KM Pekan, was covering up the Chinese vessel, which declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the incident.
Since then, up to seven Chinese coast guard fleets have flanked ocean 8, two people familiar with the matter said. One of the sources said the Malaysian Navy was monitoring the situation.
The foreign ministries of Malaysia, Brunei and China did not respond to requests for comment.
