Last summer, when shoppers entered H & M's flagship store in central London, the first thing they would see was a dark blue, floral miniskirt hanging from the front and center. The dress, which costs just ? 4 ($4.80), doesn't just function at a low price. It also has a green label with the word "contract.".
Further down the aisle, the recycle bin stands next to a series of striped T-shirts and dresses.
This setup is not uncommon in H & M's 4473 stores around the world. That's because the company wants to be seen as a climate champion.
Sweden's clothing Empire has launched a series of sustainable development plans to encourage customers to bring back unwanted clothes for reuse. Since 2002, it has been releasing its annual sustainability report, and in 2010 it launched its first consistent collection using organic cotton and recycled materials.
Recently, the H & M group announced a plan to make all its clothing from recyclable or sustainably sourced materials by 2030. It is also trying to add "repair and refurbishment" stations to select stores and test clothing rentals in Stockholm.
